French antique wrought iron spiral ejector candlestick. 1700s candleholder. Rat de cave.
A late 18thC / early 19thC French antique candlestick.
This fabulous old candlestick comprises of a metal spiral column of 7 coils with a hook for hanging or carrying, set in to a wooden base.
It would have taken a long candle which would be raised as it burnt down by sliding the side lever up the spiral, simple but ingenious.
The overall condition is very good, it looks like the column has been cleaned and polished at some time, there are also just a few wax remnants here and there. The mechanism works as well today as when it was first made. Not many usable antiques survive from the 1700s, but when handled and treated with care , candlesticks can live on for their intended use.
A fabulous rare and very collectable old candlestick that would make a wonderful addition to any collection.
