Here we have an absolutely lovely little antique picture.
Please check the dimensions carefully, this is a small painting.
The scene depicted is of a gallant assisting a lady in the street with various other characters in the background.
The detailing on this picture is superb, the faces of the various characters are very finely done, and you can even see the smoke from the gentleman‘s pipe inside the wine shop, and the rain above the canopy
Although the costumes of the people seem to indicate they are from the early eighteenth century, we believe the picture to date from the nineteenth century so it is done in the romantic style of that period, looking back into the past.
The picture is painted onto a wooden board which looks like it could be mahogany as it has a very fine grain.
The painting is in a good condition overall, there is some fine crackling to the paint as you would expect on a piece of this age, and the picture could do with a light clean. The board itself has a very slight warp to it which I have tried to show in one of the photos, but this is again only to be expected on such an old painting.
A superbly painted little oil painting, a really vibrant and interesting scene, and a picture that sympathetically reframed and cleaned would make a wonderful addition to any collection.
