A fascinating and very old book in French.
The book is entitled Les jeunes femmes which is the young girls and we think dates back to the early nineteenth century, possibly Regency.
The clothing certainly depicts the fashion of the regency period, very Pride and prejudice. The book is the troisieme edition the third edition and was written by J. N. Bouilly. I believe this book is about the etiquette for young ladies at time it was written. The condition of the book is honestly tatty. The front cover has heavy wear and a few tears in the outer cover. The pages inside are occaisionally stained or nibbled a little in one or two places. However, the pages and book are still strongly bound together and the pictures are so well done, they are beautiful. For any one interested in early 19th century life this is a great book. The costumes in the pictures are definitely Regency and very well drawn. The book and scenes are very romantic, one could almost imagine Elizabeth Bennet reading it aloud to her sisters. The book alas, has no date we can see which is unusual. The book however is probably 200 years old at least and written in French, it would really be a fantastic little item to own. The marbling on the outside of the pages is so very faded, but just recognisable. There is a tiny tear at the bottom of the spine on the left hand side about 5 mm long.
