Japanese antique black lacquered box from the Meiji period.
Here we have a really fabulous black lacquered box in the oriental Japanese style.
This wonderful quality box has a removable compartment tray and we think it may have originally have been a little sewing box for thimbles and needles.
Nowadays it could be used for the same purpose or perhaps for keeping little pieces of jewellery in on your boudoir dressing table. I think the box is in wood rather than papier mache as it is quite heavy for its size.
The box has a hinged lid, there is no key with the box. The overall condition is good, you can see all the different scenes around the box in gold and red. I believe they used to fix powered gold and silver to the lacquer and you can actually see the texture under an eye glass. The top is more faded than the sides as is often the case as it would probably have sat atop a dressing table. There are some scratches and wear marks here and there as you would expect on an aged piece like this.
A really lovely quality antique box dating back to the late Victorian period, and a fabulous item for adding a touch of antique charm to your home decor.
