A charming little metal French inkwell showing the famous lion of Belfort by the sculptor Frederic Auguste Bartholdi.
Bartholdi was the sculptor who created the statue of liberty. The original lion was completed in 1880.
It is situated in the city of Belfort in France which is famous for having kept at bay the advancing Prussian forces in the Franco Prussian war for three months with just 17,000 French against 40,000 Prussians.
This lovely inkwell is in good condition for its age with nice patination developed over the years. I would think this inkwell dates to the early twentieth century. The little liner for the inkwell is missing but these can be found online without too much difficulty. The lid which is the head of the lion is slightly loose on its hinges, as to be expected after many years of use.
A fabulous decorative little inkwell that would look great on your desk and take you back to a time when people took pleasure in the art of letter writing.
