Antique footwarmer. French antique footwarmer.
A lovely old antique footwarmer in brass with ornate decoration around the sides.
This charming old footwarmer has two wooden pieces on the top which are in place to keep your feet from burning on the metal.
These old heaters were used for keeping ones feet warm during long carriage drives or perhaps in cold draughty churches, in fact they could be used anywhere you desired as they are portable, with a little carrying handle attached.
This one would date back to the Victorian period and has certainly lived a life.
It has taken a few knocks and bumps over its long life, and as I have shown in one of the photos it has even been repaired with a new piece of brass having been riveted onto the top rim. This just shows what this piece meant to its original owner. This was back in the day when possessions had real value and were worth keeping and repairing. Unlike todays society where things are used a few times then discarded. It will need to be handled with care, the bottom wooden base is a little loose. The wooden slats on the top have worn beautifully and really add to the charm and character of the piece.
The inner tray which was used for housing the burning coals or wood is still present, which in itself is quite unusual, as they are very often missing.
A lovely old carriage footwarmer that would make a great addition to any home decor, and would be very useful if you have a long carriage drive coming up.
