French antique bust of a girl. Clay bust.
Here we have a very special bust in terracotta of a girl. It is full of charm and character.
It is very nicely modelled and has a real feeling of serenity about it. It is made of clay but has a lovely off white glazed finish. There is some green baize underneath which will have been a later addition to stop the statue from scratching a surface.
It was found locally in an antique shop here in Normandy.
The overall condition is good there are however a few chips to the clay here and there. You can see on the top of the head there is a small chip which shows the clay beneath I have tried to show this in the photos. Having said that, this is a wonderful quality piece of art and a piece that we could not pass by. It has been modelled by a really talented artist.
These little knocks and chips add the originality and authenticity of the piece. A beautiful French bust.
There are some markings on the back saying "Apres" (After) and then the name Houdon, which is Jean Antoine Houdon 1741-1828 who was a very famous French sculpture. After Houdon means that the bust is in the style of Houdon. There is also the number 413.
A fabulous old bust that would look superb if you are going for that classical French feel, a piece that would really add to any shabby chic look and be a wonderful addition to any boudoir decor.
