Antique wallpaper printing roller. 19th century printing roller. Victorian industrial decor.
A wonderful example of Victorian invention and industry. This wooden wallpaper printing roller with raised printing area and floral panels below is a marvelous creation indeed.
In 1798 Louis Robert, in France, made the first continuous rolls of paper.
In 1836 the tax on wallpaper was lifted. In 1839 Harold potter patented a new printing machine that printed four colours and could print up to four hundred rolls of paper a day, thus making wallpaper more popular and more affordable. Although inspired by the textile industry and their copper rollers with engraved patterns, rollers for wallpaper printing have raised areas where the oil based paint is applied.
Antique rollers today are often used for interior design accents such as lamp bases.
The beautiful workmanship in this piece resonates with both decorative and industrial design.
The design on this piece is quite unusual in style. Some of the raised wooden patterns have minor damage, the odd chip here and there and there are some woodworm exit holes here and there which is the norm on anything wooden from France. Overall this is a very solid and decorative piece that would look great in any interior.
A rare example of French industrial heritage.
